Jubilee Chase is a captain of the soldiers that have been sent to Avon to stop the rebel colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating rebels.
Flynn Cormac is trying to lead a rebellion against the corporation that rules over Avon. These corporations have been terraforming uninhabitable planets and try to recruit colonists by promising them better lives for their children. But they never kept their promises on Avon.
Jubilee and Flynn should never have met. But Flynn’s desperate for any advantage he can get so when he crosses paths with Jubilee he does the only thing he can think of – he returns to the rebel base with her as his prisoner. As his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl, Flynn decides to do something that will change his life forever.
I bought These Broken Stars and This Shattered World a few months ago and decided to read them closer to the release of Their Fractured Light later this month.
It took me awhile to get used to all the new characters and the fact that I couldn’t see how it linked to These Broken Stars and what happened to Lilac and Tarver at first. But as I kept reading I started to see the links.
I enjoyed getting to know Jubilee and Flynn and learning what made them into the people they are. Even though Jubilee is a soldier and has always been loyal, after meeting Flynn and listening to him explain what his people are going through, she starts to have doubts about what’s actually happening on Avon. As she starts investigating, Jubilee soon realises she needs help and turns to the only person she can trust. Even though Jubilee doubted Flynn at first she steps up to help not only the colonists but all the people on Avon.
Flynn risked everything thing he knew to help Jubilee. Even when she thought the worst of herself and all the evidence pointed to her, he was still willing to risk losing not only his home but the faith of his people to save her life. Flynn was torn in two directions, grief and anger at the person he thought had attacked his friends and family but also, for reasons he didn’t understand, he still had faith is her. I think they were both really brave for how young they are.
I’m glad that both Lilac and Tarver made appearances in This Shattered World. I really like both of them.
LaRoux Industries did really horrible things to both people and creatures in These Broken Stars and I didn’t think the things they did could get worse but they have. Same with Rodrick LaRoux. He was awful in These Broken Stars but he really stepped up his awfulness in this book. He still seems to want control over Lilac. Someone really needs to take him and his company down.
I cannot wait to read Their Fractured Light and find out what happens to Jubilee, Flynn, Lilac and Tarver. And I’m hoping lots of really bad things happen to Rodrick and LaRoux Industries.
