“You’re waiting for your beloved husband to get home from work. You’re making his dinner, looking forward to hearing about his day. That’s the last thing you remember.

You wake up in hospital, with no idea how you got there. They tell you that you were in an accident; you lost control of your car while driving in a dangerous part of town.ย

The police suspect you were up to no good. But your husband refuses to believe it. Your best friend is not so sure. And even you don’t know what yo believe.”

I received a copy of A Stranger in the House from Penguin Random House New ZealandDHEFO2EUAAE0b88 to review. I wasn’t expecting this but I’m so glad I was able to review a copy. I love psychological thrillers.

I’m going to say this now, I was 95% sure that I knew what Karen had done but I couldn’t figure out why. I did think the story Karen told the police was too convenient and there was more going on. But I was not expecting what actually happened at all. The twist to Karen’s story at the end of the book was so good! I did figure out how Brigid’s story was going to end – unless that was all in her head too… I felt like the ending was left open but not enough for a sequel.

I found myself not liking any of the main characters. I think the exception was the detective but he didn’t really count as a main character for me. The ones I’m talking about are Karen, her husband Tom and their neighbour Brigid. They all had their flaws, some more than others, but I just didn’t find any of them likable at all. That normally puts me off a book but for some reason it didn’t with A Stranger in the House. I really wanted to know what was going to happen to Karen and what really happened in that restaurant. But I think it was the twist at the end of the book that really made me not like Karen.

I found some of the writing in this book kind of annoying. I lost count of how many times Tom said ‘the woman I love’ or something similar. And I think he said it more than once on the same page. There was also something Karen kept repeating, to Tom and the police, but it’s kind ofย a spoiler so I’m not going to put it here. I did read an ARC of A Stranger in the House so that may have changed in the finished copy. It’s not the worst thing to have to read but I did notice every time the characters repeated themselves.

I would definitely recommend this book though. Especially to people who love books that have you guessing the whole way through. I think this is a mystery/thriller so if you enjoy those genres then I’d recommend finding a copy if you haven’t already. I also think fans of Girl on the Train and Gone Girl will like this.

*Thank you Penguin Random House for sending me a copy to review*

August Wrap Up.

monthlywrapup

I had a couple of reading slumps in August but still managed to read eleven books which I don’t think was that bad. So I’m just going to jump into the list and my ratings.

I did participate in ARC August for the first two weeks in August but I think that’s what put me into my first reading slump – trying to finish all the ARCs on my list. I always try to stick to a TBR but it doesn’t always work. With me trying to force myself to read the five books I had on my ARC August TBR it just made me not want to read.

The second reading slump happened when I finished Tell It to the Moon and I have no idea why. So I ended up re-reading Fantastic Beasts and then finally picking up Stars Above, which has been on my shelves since it was released.

Anyway, I don’t think I did that badly. Hopefully September will be better but I’m not going to hold my breath.

How many books did you read in August and what was your favourite?

The questions are:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

I started Stars Above yesterday. I’ve had this book since it came out but never picked it up to read until now. I’m pretty sure I’d already read Glitches as an e-novella before Stars Above came out.

I’ve been in another reading slump the last few days. I picked up the previous book hoping it would also get me out of my slump and it kind of did, but not really. So I took a break from review books and read two of my books hoping that would help.

Stars Above is full of novellas set in The Luna Chronicles universe. I think there was one story that didn’t involve the characters from The Luna Chronicles (much) but the rest have them in. I don’t know if I’ll be reviewing this or not yet.

Recently Finished โ€“ย DHySvPOUQAAaxPX
So this is the first book I picked up hoping it would get me out of my reading slump because I knew it was a fast read. And I did enjoy reading it again (this is the second time I’ve read it) but I still didn’t feel like reading after I’d finished it.

I know most people just take a break from reading if they’re in a slump but even though I don’t feel like reading I am so bored when I’m at home and not reading. Because the only TV shows I watch are Game of Thrones and Teen Wolf. Anyway, I love the screenplay of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I’ve already reviewed this so I won’t be posting about it again.ย DHi274BUAAIOPUI

I finally read Tell It to the Moon. This is the sequel to The Moonlight Dreamers, which I read last month and really enjoyed. I was actually surprised by how much I liked both books. But I’ll talk about Tell It to the Moon more in my review. I’ll be posting that very soon because of the giveaway I keep talking about. But I still need to write it first.

The giveaway is for people in New Zealand and Australia. I’ll have more details in my review of Tell It to the Moon though so if you’re interested then keep an eye out for it.

I also finished A Stranger in the House. I think I had like 50 pages when I did my WWW Wednesday post last week so I didn’t have to read much to finish the book. I really DHEFO2EUAAE0b88enjoyed this. And surprisingly I have already written the review. Now I just have to post it. I want to start writing my reviews when I finish the book instead of leaving it too long and then I have no idea what to write… Which is my problem with more than one review.

Okay, so moving on… Like I said I really enjoyed A Stranger in the House. I think it’s a psychological thriller but I haven’t really looked into it. So if you like those kinds of books then I’d definitely recommend finding a copy of this.

Reading Nextย โ€“
I think if I’m out of my reading slump when I finish Stars Above that I’m going to read And Fire Came Down. This is the sequel to Resurrection Bay. I read that a couple of 10months ago and really enjoyed it. I think these are crime books? But again, I haven’t looked up their genre.

I can’t remember what the synopsis said about this book but I know it has some of the same characters from the first book in it. And I’m assuming someone dies. Or maybe more than one person? I guess I’ll find out when I read the book.

What have you been reading recently?

I started A Stranger in the House a couple of days ago but I was in a little slump and didn’t want to read the other day so yeah. It had nothing to do with the book though. I just get into these weird moods where I just don’t want to read and it sucks. But I seem to be over it now. Fingers crossed anyway.

So this book follows Karen, her husband and neighbour/friend. Karen wakes up in hospital with no memory of what happened or how she got there. The police think she was up to something but she’s not sure what to believe. It’s been really good so far. I’m hoping to finish it today.

I was sent a copy of The Cause of Death at the start of August from HarperCollins New Zealand. It’s been so long since I read a true crime book. I don’t normally read books straight away but this one just seemed to keep calling out to me. It’s set around where I live too so that was a plus.

Anyway, this book has a few cases that Dr. Temple-Camp was a pathologist for, like devil worshippers, drug mules and spontaneous combustion. Oh, and a high-profile case for the area – the Mark Lundy case. That’s been talked about for years and some people still think he’s innocent.

I really enjoyed this book, even though it was about death and murder. I couldn’t put it down.ย DGv0q-JU0AEVX0E

I also read I Have No Secrets. This book follows Jemma who has cerebral palsy. She relies on her family and carer for everything as she can’t talk or move. Someone in her life tells her this horrible secret and she can’t do anything about it – probably why they told her – but that may be about to change…

I really enjoyed this. I’ll hopefully be posting a review of this soon but I’d definitely recommend picking up a copy.

I’m going to be reading Tell It to the Moon next. I’ve been talking about a giveaway that I’ll be hosting when I post my review so I thought it was about time I actually read the book.

This is the sequel to The Moonlight Dreamers which I read last month and really enjoyed. I haven’t posted my review for that yet though. I’m still really behind with my reviews.

So that’s my week in book. What have you read recently?

#ARCAugust 2017 Update [Week 2]

arc-august2

I totally forgot to post this over the weekend so I’m a little late but better late than never I guess.ย DGajxgdU0AAN5B0

I only read one ARC this week. Well I did finish one and read another so one and a half I guess.

I finished Darien: Empire of Salt. It took me a little longer than I thought it would but I wasn’t really in the mood to read when I picked it up and it wasn’t the books fault. I was just more interested in social media and YouTube… Which is really annoying when I need to read.

Anyway, I liked this book. I’m not sure when the sequel is coming out but I’ll be keeping an eye out for it. I’ll be reviewing this soon,

The second book I read last week was I Have No Secrets and I really liked this. I didn’t DGv0q-JU0AEVX0Ewant to put it down. I felt really bad for Jemma with the way some people treated her but she was such an amazing person.

This book follows Jemma, who has cerebral palsy and relies on her family and carer for everything. Jemma can’t move or talk. Someone tells Jemma a secret – one the person knows Jemma can’t tell anyone. But things may be about to change…

I’d definitely recommend this book! It was a really fast read for me, I didn’t want to put it down. I’ll also be reviewing this soon so if you want to see what I thought of the book keep anย eye out.ย DHEFO2EUAAE0b88

I started A Stranger in the House yesterday. This was sent to me from Penguin Random House New Zealand and I wasn’t expecting it at all but I’m really liking it so far. This is a psychological thriller and I think fans of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train will enjoy this.

I’m not really that far in so I’m still trying to figure what’s going on but if you like psychological thrillers then I’d recommend this book.

So far I’ve read three ARCs for ARC August. How many have you read so far?

I haven’t taken a photo of my current read yet because the weather is crap and so is my lighting…

Anyway, I started I Have No Secrets this morning. I’m not that far in yet but I like what I’ve read so far.

This book follows Jemma who has cerebral palsy. She can’t move or talk so she relies on her parents and carer for everything. But Jemma is smart and loves to learn. She also knows a lot of secrets – and one of them is so terrible she doesn’t know how to deal with it. But what can she do about it?

I really like Jemma and I am looking forward to finding out more about her and her family.ย DGajxgdU0AAN5B0

Recently Finished โ€“
I finished reading Darien: Empire of Salt yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It did take me a while to get into but I think that was because I wasn’t in the mood to read not because of the story.

This is the first book in a YA fantasy series. It follows a few different characters and I was confused what was going on at the start but it did all come together in the end. I’ll be reviewing this soon so if you’re interested in reading that keep an eye out.

I also read The Student by Iain Ryan. This is a very shot book but it felt like there was a DGWQ9JZUQAA9v89lot going on. Murder, drugs, gang members and this one guy is in the middle of it all. Not for anything he’s done but because of the company he keeps and the fact he deals drugs.

I don’t really know what to think of this book. I don’t like drugs at all so I didn’t like the MC for dealing them or his friends for dealing them either. I guess I’ll have to get my thoughts together when I write my review… Or before then actually… Anyway hopefully I’ll get this reviewed soon too.

The Student and Darien: Empire of Salt were also books I read for ARC August. Oh and so is I Have No Secrets.ย DGB1t_4UwAMwaVm

I finished The Crown’s Game too and I really enjoyed it. It’s not what I was expecting but in a really good way. To be honest I don’t actually know what I was expecting but that wasn’t it.

I can’t wait to read the sequel, The Crown’s Fate, even though I’m like 100% sure how it’ll end for two of the characters. I’m not really into it for the romance or whatever but I do want to see how the story will end. I have no idea when I’ll get to it though.

A Stranger is the House was sent to me from Penguin Random House New Zealand to review. It was a complete surprise but it sounds like something I’ll enjoy reading so I’m looking forward to picking it up.

All I know about this is that a woman is in her kitchen making dinner and then she’s waking up in the hospital with no memory of how she got there or what happened. Her husband doesn’t know what to think but her best friend seems to think she was up to no good.

I can’t wait to find out what’s going on in this book!

What have you been reading?

August TBR.

download

I know this is a week late but better late than never I guess… I have read two and a bit books this month but only one of them is actually in the TBR pile… One I totally forgot about and the other one I was reading at the time and it slipped my mind.

I’ve read The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye and The Student by Iain Ryan. I enjoyed both of them but I did like The Crown’s Game more. I’m currently reading Darien: Empire of Salt by C.F. Iggulden. This is the first book in a new YA fantasy trilogy/series. I’m enjoying this too but I just haven’t been in the mood to read so I’m kind of struggling with it. I don’t think it’s the book though.

Then there’s the books on my TBR that I haven’t gotten to yet. My next read will be I DGLyLltVoAAjiAtHave No Secrets by Penny Joelson. This sounds really good and I can’t wait to pick it up. It will also be my third book for ARC August.

A few of the books on this month’s TBR were also on my July TBR… I have been reading really slowly lately. My new medication makes me nauseous and I just can’t read when I feel like throwing up all the time. But I’m hoping to actually read Godblind, Midnight Jewel and Song of the Current this month.

It’s kind of an ambitious TBR pile considering my reading has been slowing down but whatever. We’ll find out how many I’ll actually get through at the end of the month.

What’s on your TBR for August?

– Aimee.
