#ARCAugust 2017 Update [Week 2]

I totally forgot to post this over the weekend so I’m a little late but better late than never I guess. DGajxgdU0AAN5B0

I only read one ARC this week. Well I did finish one and read another so one and a half I guess.

I finished Darien: Empire of Salt. It took me a little longer than I thought it would but I wasn’t really in the mood to read when I picked it up and it wasn’t the books fault. I was just more interested in social media and YouTube… Which is really annoying when I need to read.

Anyway, I liked this book. I’m not sure when the sequel is coming out but I’ll be keeping an eye out for it. I’ll be reviewing this soon,

The second book I read last week was I Have No Secrets and I really liked this. I didn’t DGv0q-JU0AEVX0Ewant to put it down. I felt really bad for Jemma with the way some people treated her but she was such an amazing person.

This book follows Jemma, who has cerebral palsy and relies on her family and carer for everything. Jemma can’t move or talk. Someone tells Jemma a secret – one the person knows Jemma can’t tell anyone. But things may be about to change…

I’d definitely recommend this book! It was a really fast read for me, I didn’t want to put it down. I’ll also be reviewing this soon so if you want to see what I thought of the book keep an eye out. DHEFO2EUAAE0b88

I started A Stranger in the House yesterday. This was sent to me from Penguin Random House New Zealand and I wasn’t expecting it at all but I’m really liking it so far. This is a psychological thriller and I think fans of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train will enjoy this.

I’m not really that far in so I’m still trying to figure what’s going on but if you like psychological thrillers then I’d recommend this book.

So far I’ve read three ARCs for ARC August. How many have you read so far?

– Aimee.

#ARCAugust 2017 Update [Week 1]

I’m a bit late with my first ARC August update. I planned on posting this morning but I wasn’t feeling 100% (I’m still not) but I wanted to post this before Monday so here we are.

I managed to read one and a bit books for my first week of ARC August. The first book DGWQ9JZUQAA9v89wasn’t actually on my TBR but it’s an ARC and I really needed to get it read so I’m still counting it.

I read The Student in one day. I didn’t really know what to expect with this because it had been a while since I’d read the synopsis and I decided not to read it again.

But I did like the book. It was a bit slow in places but overall I like it. I can’t remember if I had to review all the books I read for ARC August before the end of the month. I’m really behind on my reviews so I’m not sure if I’ll have it up by the end of the month or not.

The second book I picked up for ARC August was Darien: Empire of Salt. This is the first DGajxgdU0AAN5B0book in a new YA fantasy trilogy/series. I can’t remember which. I didn’t get much read yesterday, like 89 pages. And I haven’t read much today because I feel like crap but I do like what I’ve read so far.

I’m hoping to finish this in the next couple of days. Depending on how I feel tomorrow…

Anyway, if you’re participating in ARC August this year then I hope you did better than me this week. Let me know how many books you’ve read so far in the comments.

– Aimee.

ARC August 2016 Update [Week 4] & Wrap Up.

So I’ve decided to wrap up my ARC August a few days early. I don’t think I’m going to get the last two books I had on my TBR read in the next three days  because I decided to read Winter instead. I needed a break from review books and wanted to read a book just for me, although I’ll probably end up reviewing it anyway. CpN_7MjUsAAECP6

I had planned on reading five books during ARC August but I failed and only managed three, On the Other Side, The Sword of Summer and The Regulars. But I am glad I finally got them off my TBR.

Last year I did so much better so I am kind of disappointed in myself but I’ve read 12 books this month. I probably could have put Who’s That Girl? and The Moonlight Dreamers in there somewhere but it’s too late now. I’ll get to them eventually.

I plan on taking part in ARC August next year if I have any ARCs for it next year. Hopefully I’ll do a lot better then.

Of the three books I read this year my favourite was definitely The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. I cannot wait to read The Hammer of Thor!

How did you do with ARC August this year?

– Aimee.

ARC August 2016 Update [Week 3].

I read two books for ARC August this week. Well, I read one and finished another. But I’m going to count it as two. CptyTJSUsAA5DxN

The first book I read was The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. I think I mentioned in my last update that I received an ARC of this recently from Penguin Random House NZ. It hasn’t been sitting on my shelf for almost a year. I think the ARCs of The Sword of Summer were sent out around this time last year… I’m not sure.

Anyway, I can’t remember when I finished this… Monday or Tuesday last week I think. I loved it and I cannot wait to read The Hammer of Thor when it comes out in October. Magnus is a great character, kind of funny and sarcastic but I still think Percy is better.

And the second book I read last week for ARC August wasCqChJfsWgAA4yKc The Regulars by Georgia Clark. I received a copy of this from Simon and Schuster Australia to review.

I didn’t really know what to expect with this when I started it but I actually liked it. It’s about three twenty-something woman in New York who are all struggling with something in their lives. Then they come across Pretty, a magic potion type thing and will one drop they turn jaw-droppingly gorgeous for a week and with their new body comes new opportunities… But is Pretty as good as it seems?

I wasn’t really sure if I’d like this but I did. Some parts were boring-ish and annoying. But I’ll get to those in my review.

So that’s three books down, two to go. Hopefully I can get them read by the end of the month.. But I’m not sure it will happen.

How’s ARC August going for you?

– Aimee.

WWW Wednesday [August 17th 2016] –

This meme is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. All you have to do is answer the following three questions in a post and then put a link to that post in the Comments over at Taking on a World of Words.

The questions are:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading –    14
I started reading The Regulars this morning. I’m not really sure what to expect with this, so far it’s a little weird but I definitely want to know what’s going on and what will happen to Willow, Evie and Krista.

Simon and Schuster Australia sent me a copy of this last month to review. I have an uncorrected proof so this is going to count as part of my ARC August and it’ll be my first book in the Read-Them-All-Thon that I’m participating in. I’m meant to read a book with a red cover but I don’t have one atm so this will have to do.CptyTJSUsAA5DxN

Recently Finished –
I finished reading Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer last night. It took me a little longer than I thought to read but that’s because I’ve been distracted a lot lately.

Penguin Random House New Zealand sent me a copy of this recently and this is also an uncorrected proof so it was my second book for ARC August.

I loved this book. I think there have only been three books of Riordan’s that I haven’t really liked and they were The Kane Chronicles, I just couldn’t get into them. Even though I didn’t know a lot about Norse gods before reading this (the Thor movies don’t count right?) it was easy to pick up. Magnus is really funny, kind of like Percy, and I loved that Annabeth was in this. I was expecting it with the last name Chase though and I’d already read The Last Oracle where Percy mentions that Annabeth is busy with family in Boston.

I’ll be reviewing this soon. I can’t wait to read The Hammer of Thor!CpjGnt4UMAApTUo

The Outliers wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I thought they, the Outliers, were some kind of group that could read people’s minds and it wouldn’t be set in ‘out time’ but it was not anything like that. Probably a good thing because my idea is pretty stupid.

Anyway, The Outliers was so good and I couldn’t put it down. I really liked it and I cannot wait to read the next book in the trilogy. I think it’s a trilogy anyway. The ending was so frustrating. Not frustrating like it was bad but frustrating like I need the next book right now!

I’ll be talking about this more in my review, which I’ll be posting soon.CpX8aOUUAAEeC6p

On the Other Side was the first book I read for ARC August. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this either but it was good. I think I gave it three stars on Goodreads.

It’s not a bad book but I thought it was kind of cheesy on places and a little weird too. I liked the main character, I think her name was Evie but I’m not 100% sure. I’m like, 85% sure her name was Evie.. Anyway, she wanted to have her own life, not follow the really stupid traditions of her parents and their friends. Then stuff happens and Evie’s life doesn’t end the way she wanted it to. It wasn’t a bad life but she’s kept secrets from her kids and they are weighing her down now that she’s died. To pass on into her personal heaven she needs to relieve herself of those secrets.

I’ll be reviewing this soon too. I have no idea when though. 6

Reading Next –
I will be reading Shield by Rachael Craw next. I received a copy of this from Walker Books Australia on the weekend. This is the last book in the Spark trilogy and I cannot wait to find out how Evie’s (yes, that’s three different Evies in three books..) story ends.

I was going to skim Stray for a little refresher but I just don’t have time so I’m hoping I can pick up the story again as I read Shield. I did it with Glass Sword and I know I missed a few things but I did eventually figure most of it out and it didn’t affect the story for me. I just hope I can remember things from Stray that I’ve forgotten…

There’s another week in books. I think I’m finally out of that horrible slump. Now I just need to stay out of it and catch up with my reviews because I am so behind on them.

What have you been reading?

– Aimee.

ARC August 2016 Update [Week 2].

I’ve finally started my ARC August books. Last weeks I didn’t read any books on my TBR, I don’t even know why but last year I didn’t read any books for it in the first week as well. CpX8aOUUAAEeC6p

Anyway, I’ve read On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher, which I received from Hachette New Zealand to review.

It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but I liked it. It has a magical twist to it. I think you’d call it magical… I’m not really sure. I kept forgetting that it had these weird things and think the book was normal again and then, boom!, another weird/magical things.

Like I said, I liked it but it wasn’t what I was expecting. And I’m not really sure I liked the “love story” either. But then I’m not really one for romance anyway.

I’m halfway through Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer now and I am loving it. I CptyTJSUsAA5DxNknow this came out last year but Penguin Random House New Zealand recently sent me an ARC of the book so I decided to put it in my ARC August TBR.

I wanted to read this closer to the release of the second book and I think it’s out in October so close enough.

I’ll admit that the only Norse mythology I know of is from the Thor movies and they aren’t accurate so I knew basically nothing before starting this. I do miss Sif though, she’s my favourite after Thor and Loki. Not that Thor has been in it either. So far anyway.

I’m hoping to finish this in the next few days and The Regulars will be my next read for ARC August.

How are you doing with your ARC August TBR so far?

– Aimee.

WWW Wednesday [August 10th 2016] –

This meme is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. All you have to do is answer the following three questions in a post and then put a link to that post in the Comments over at Taking on a World of Words.

The questions are:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading –   CpX8aOUUAAEeC6p
I started On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher yesterday and I am liking it so far but it’s a little weird. This is the first book I’m reading for ARC August.

All I knew going into this was that the main character, Evie, had died and is stuck on the other side and can’t move on until she’s let go of her secrets. But it’s a little more than that. It’s got magical elements too. I think that’s how you’d put it. I don’t know.. I kept forgetting that weird things happened and I’d get used to the story and then, bam!, something strange happened. And not in a bad way, it’s just not exactly what I was expecting.

I guess I have to wait and see how the story ends to make my mind up about it but for now I like it. CpD4WfbUMAQEqu-

Recently Finished –
I finished And I Darken on the weekend, Sunday night I think, and I loved it! I don’t know anything about Vlad the Impaler and Mehmed the Conqueror so I couldn’t compare the stories or judge the book on the history that inspired it which is why I liked it.

I normally hate things that aren’t historically accurate when I know it’s based on actual events in history (*cough* Reign *cough*) but because I know absolutely nothing about this time in history I loved this book and Lada. Not so much Radu and Mehmed.

I don’t plan on looking into it either in case it ruins the other two books in the trilogy. I think it’s a trilogy anyway. I just want to enjoy Lada’s story for what it is. I’ll be reviewing this soon.Co49Ky2VMAAG-lb

I’ve finally finished The Selection Series! I have no idea what it is about these books but I’ve loved all of them.

I’m not normally into romancey books but these have a lot more going on that just romance and the Selection. That’s probably why I like them. If it was just about Maxon and Eadlyn finding partners so they could carry on the royal line then I’d be really bored but there’s so much more to these books.

I’ll be reviewing The Crown soon-ish. Now that my reading has kind of picked up my reviews have fallen behind. I write my reviews by hand before posting them on here because I just can’t get my thoughts out when I’m just typing. Which is probably why my WWW Wednesday ramble a lot. 6

Reading Next –
I’m going to read The Outliers by Kimberly McCreight next. This is the only book I put on my TBR this month that isn’t part of a read-a-thon or ARC August. I just wanted to read it because it’s been sitting on my TBR shelf for what feels like months and I really, really want to read it.

Hopefully I can get through it fast and get back to the other books on my TBR.

Let me know what you’re reading in the comments.

– Aimee.
