“Leave it to the heroes to save the world. Villains just want to rule it.

In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed authors team up with thirteen influential Booktubers to create tales from the often misunderstood villains point of view.”

I received a copy of Because You Love to Hate Me from Bloomsbury Australia to review. DJ9ddklUEAACIKF

I don’t usually like these kinds of books because most of the time I only like a couple of the stories and the rest are just meh. Especially when there is more than one author. Doesn’t stop me reading them though. But I really enjoyed this book.

Yes, there were a few stories that I didn’t really like or connect with but there were more that I liked. Which is why I gave the book four stars. Some of the stories are retellings and others were original.

I’m not going to talk about all thirteen stories in Because You Love to Hate Me, that would just take too long. I liked ten of them which has never happened before. So I’m just going to mention three here. I won’t say what the stories are about because the way the book is set out the challenges from Booktubers are revealed at the end and I don’t want to spoil them for anyone.

The first story I’m going to mention is The Sea Witch by Marissa Meyer. You can probably guess what this one is about from the title. I had an idea when I first picked the book up. This one might actually my favourite because of the twist it had.

The second story is Indigo and Shade by April Genevieve Tucholke. I loved Tucholke’s retelling of this fairytale. I’ve never read anything by Tuchilke before this. Indigo and Shade did start off slow but once it picked up I really enjoyed it.

The last story I’m going to mention here is Shirley and Jim by Susan Dennard. This one was told in emails and I really liked the twist on two fictional characters. I wish I could talk about these more but I just don’t want to ruin them for anyone. I do try to do spoiler free reviews.

There were a few authors in this book that I’d never read anything from before I picked up Because You Love to Hate Me. Out of the thirteen authors in this book I’d read books by only six of them. Which is more than I thought but also not a lot. It has made me want to pick up some books by the other authors though.

I really enjoyed Because You Love to Hate Me and cannot recommend it enough. If you love fairytale retellings and villains then you definitely need to pick up a copy.

*Thank you Bloomsbury Australia for sending me a copy to review*

September Wrap Up.

monthlywrapup

I haven’t posted in a few days and there are some things going on in my life right now that have me a bit busy. So I’m not reading or posting on my blog at the moment. I’m hoping things will settle down again soon but I’m not sure right now.

But this post isn’t about me. It’s about the books I read in September. Which wasn’t a lot.

DK738E_UIAEj6bJ

I was in a reading slump last month and still kind of am – but also have other things happening. I only managed to read six books last month and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was a re-read. I was hoping that would help me with the slump and it did for a couple of weeks and now I’m pretty much back where I started.

Anyway, onto what I rated the books.

I Am Traitor by Sif Sigmarsdottir – ★★★/5
Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo – ★★★★/5
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling – ★★★★★/5
Because You Love to Hate Me by Ameriie – ★★★★/5
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James – ★★★★/5
Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart – ★★★/5

I didn’t have the best reading month and by the looks of this October will be the same. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

What did you read in September?

I started Genuine Fraud yesterday and it’s a little weird and I keep losing track of what’s happened because the story is being told in a weird way. I honestly don’t think I’ve read a book that’s told this way before. But I’m not going to say anything here because I’ll be doing a full review eventually.

I’ll hopefully be reading more later today but out of this and the only other book I’ve read by E. Lockhart (We Were Liars) I definitely prefer this one.

I finished The Loneliest Girl in the Universe and I really enjoyed it. I was expecting a twist to the story and it was a really good one! I figured something was up early in the book but I didn’t expect how twisted it was. But I did like it. I mean, I love sci-fi books so I figured I’d like this.

This is the third book by Lauren that I’ve read and I have liked them all. I can’t wait to see what she releases next! If you haven’t read any of Lauren’s books and like time-travel and space then I recommend picking them up. I’ll hopefully be posting my review of The Loneliest Girl in the Universe soon. DJ9ddklUEAACIKF

I also finished Because You Love to Hate Me and I enjoyed that too. I think it’s one of my favourite short story books I’ve read. There were some really good stories. I can’t remember my favourites off the top of my head but I’m sure I’ll have it figured out by the time I post my review.

There are some re-tellings in Because You Love to Hate Me and some original stories. I liked this more than I thought I would.

It’s taken me a while to figure out what I want to read next but I think I’ve finally figured it out. I am planning on reading Invictus next. I’ve read all of Ryan’s books and I’m really looking forward to this one. This has time travel.

I started Because You Love to Hate Me on Monday I think. There are some re-tellings of fairy tales/villains and some original stories. I think there are only three or four authors that have written stories for this book that I’ve actually read before and I only know of three YouTubers too.

I have liked a few stories so far but I don’t want to go into them here. I’ll talk about them in my review. But I will say that this is one of my favourite books with short stories in it that I’ve read and I can’t wait to read more of it later today.

I have finished my re-read of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It seems to have helped me get out of my latest reading slump. Fingers crossed it will stay away this time.

I won’t be reviewing Goblet of Fire because it’s not the first or even second time I’ve read it so I’m completely biased because I love the Harry Potter series.

I do want to continue my re-read of the series but I am behind on my review books thanks to my latest slump so I’m going to give it a few weeks. I’m still reading pretty slowly even though I feel like I’m out of the slump. I don’t know what’s going on with me.

I think I’m going to pick up The Loneliest Girl in the Universe next. It’s been a while since I read a sci-fi book and I really enjoy them so hopefully I’ll enjoy this too.

Anyway, that’s my WWW Wednesday for this week. It wasn’t very long but at least I read something.

So if you haven’t been reading my posts lately you may have missed that I’ve been in a reading slump lately. I have no idea why. I’ve been reading some pretty good books but I’m still in a slump. So I decided to pick up the next book in my re-read of the Harry Potter series.

I started my latest re-read of the Harry Potter series earlier this year. I think. I haven’t re-read these books in a couple of years according to Goodreads. Which is weird. I usually try to read them once a year. Anyway, I’m up to Goblet of Fire and I can read my new editions too. I put my original copies away in a box because they are getting old and I needed the shelf space. What gets you out of a reading slump?

Recently Finished –  8
So I didn’t get to post my WWW Wednesday last week because my laptop decided to upgrade Windows and it took half a day so when it had finally finished I just couldn’t be bothered with it. But luckily for me with my reading slump I haven’t actually read that much in the last two weeks so this isn’t going to be a long post.

Anyway, I’ve finally finished Wonder Woman: Warbringer. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would but it wasn’t the books fault. I really enjoyed Warbringer. It was just my slump or the mood I’m in. I don’t really know. But I will hopefully be reviewing this soon. If you love Wonder Woman then you should definitely pick up a copy. This is the first book in the DC Icons series. I think the next book is a young Batman written by Marie Lu and comes out next year. DIbjfWkUMAAxTEN

The other book I managed to read in the last two weeks was I Am Traitor. I was really looking forward to this because I love alien invasions but it was just okay. I’m not sure if there’s going to be a sequel but I don’t think I’ll be picking it up if there is.

I’ll be posting a full review of this soon-ish so I don’t really want to go into it too much here but I found some of the characters kind of annoying and I just wasn’t really invested in the humans or their story. Or the aliens either. It was just a little weird.

Reading Next – 6
I’m thinking my next read will be Because You Love to Hate Me. I’ve wanted to read this ever since I first heard about it. I love retellings and even though I’m not into villains I’m still interested in reading this book. But if there’s some retelling of Snape and how he’s misunderstood you can forget about it. There will be no changing my mind about him.

See, even though I didn’t post do one of these for a week I didn’t manage to read very much. If you have any tips about how to get out of reading slumps then leave me a comment.

What have you read lately?

September TBR.

monthlytbr-copy

So this month I have a pile of books to read but I know I won’t read them all. But I decided to share them anyway because it might make me get my ass into gear and actually pick one of them up. I haven’t read anything since Friday I think.

DI6or9XVoAAZ4Go

I know this is a huge pile. Two of these books have been on my TBR for months and I seriously need to pick them up and read them.

I’m really excited to read Wonder Woman: Warbringer and Because You Love to Hate Me. I’ve been wanting to read them both since I first heard of them.

What’s on your TBR for September? Any recommendations from my TBR to read first?

This is a really short post today because I have no idea what else to write…

Happy reading!

August Book Haul.

monthly-book-haul-banner-img

I was planning on going on a book buying ban in August but that didn’t last long. I did only buy seven books but I still broke the ban. I seriously don’t even know why I bother.

Anyway, I’ll just get into the haul. Hopefully this won’t be as long.

1

So the first two books I got in August were sent to me from HarperCollins New Zealand. I’ve actually already read and reviewed this. Which doesn’t happen very often in my hauls. If you want to read my review you can click the link here.

I’m not going to go into what The Cause of Death is about here because I have posted my review of this. But I will say that if you love true crime and can find a copy of this then I recommend reading it. Plus, it’s set in the area where I live. So I’ve actually been to some of the places in this book rather than just reading about them. Which was a nice change. And some of the cases were really interesting.

I read The Outliers last year and really enjoyed it. I’ve been waiting for the sequel ever 2since I finished the first book. I don’t remember everything that happened but I do remember how the book ended. I’m hoping to pick this up soon.

I think the first book was about some kind of power? I know someone was kidnapped or ran away and her friend and boyfriend went to look for her. Then things went all kinds of crazy and that’s where I’m missing things. But I can remember the ending which is weird. I might either look up the book or read my review so that I don’t have to re-read the book. I’ll see. Hopefully there’s some kind of recap at the start of The Scattering.

So the next book was a surprise. I don’t remember requesting it but that doesn’t mean I 3didn’t. I’m not good with remembering which books I’ve requested. Anyway, this book was sent to me from Allen and Unwin New Zealand.

I don’t know anything about this. It’s not a very long book so hopefully I’ll get to it soon-ish. I’m assuming it’s about someone who either wants to fit in with everyone else or is being told to be like all the other girls and doesn’t want to. But I can also be completely off. I guess I’ll find out when I pick it up. I’m not exactly sure when that will be with the reading slumps I’ve been in lately. I’m struggling to even start a new book right now….

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was sent to me from Walker Books Australia. I read 4Laurens other books, The Next Together and The Last Beginning. I liked them both so I was excited to see Lauren had written a sci-fi because I love sci-fi books. Although I haven’t read that many…

I think this is about a girl that’s alone and falls in love with someone she’s never met. Or something like that anyway. I might put this on my August TBR. I haven’t even thought about that yet. This reading slump is annoying me and I don’t know what books will help get me out of it this time. Or maybe I should just stop scrolling through social media and actually pick up a book.

The next two books were sent to me from Bloomsbury Australia to review. I have read 5Moonrise but haven’t reviewed it yet. I have read one other book by Sarah Crossan and I loved that so I was excited to receive Moonrise to review.

This book follows Joe as he goes to visit the brother he hasn’t seen in ten years. Ed has been sitting on death row in Texas (I think) and his execution has been set. This might be the last summer Joe and Ed get to spend together.

I found Moonrise really gripping and so hard to put down. And it actually made me cry. Not a lot of book have made me cry but this one did. I’m hoping to post my review of this soon but I’d definitely recommend it.

Bloomsbury Australia also sent me a copy of Because You Love to Hate Me. I know I don’t 6have a very good history with short story books with different authors but there were a few that have written stories for this that I love and I just had to read it. I’m looking forward to reading the stories by Renee Ahdieh, Marissa Meyer, Victoria Schwab, Samantha Shannon and Nicola Yoon. I think some of the stories are retellings and I love retellings so I can’t wait to pick this up.

I think I might put this on my August TBR. I have been wanting to read this since I first heard about it. Maybe it’ll help me with my stupid reading slump. I bet you’re sick of me talking about that now.

The next books I got were the ones I broke my book buying ban for. I had wanted the 7hardbacks of this edition of the Harry Potter series since they came out but my mum bought be the paperback box set. But I got an email from Booktopia with a free shipping code and saw that they were that expensive on there. I’ve seen them listed for double what I paid so I just got them. But I did sell my paperbacks so I don’t have three editions.

I have slowly been re-reading the series. I’m up to Goblet of Fire so I’m thinking I might also put that on my August TBR. I love re-reading the Harry Potter books even though I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read them. It’s one of my favourite series.

The next two books were sent to me from Penguin Random House New Zealand to 8review. I was so excited to see Wonder Woman: Warbringer! It’s one of the books I was most excited to read this month so this is definitely going on my TBR for August.

All I can remember about this book is it follows Diana as she saves a mortal girl, Alia, who is a warbringer descended from Helen of Troy and something about if Alia is left to live and not helped by some spring then she will bring in an age of war.

I loved the Wonder Woman movie and cannot wait to pick this up. I think this might have to be my next read.

Penguin Random House New Zealand also sent me a copy of A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares to review. I can’t 9remember what this is about but I’ve heard good things about Krystal Sutherland so I wanted to give this book a chance.

I don’t know when I’ll get around to reading this. Hopefully sometime this month but who really knows at this point?

I know Krystal is an Australian author and I need to read more NZ and Aussie authors. I haven’t actually read that many. Although I don’t know of a lot of NZ YA authors so that’s also a problem I need to fix. Maybe one day. I think I need to read my books first.

So a few of weeks ago I was contacted on Instagram by a company asking if I’d like a 10review copy of The Crowns of Croswald. I looked the book up on Goodreads and thought it sounded interesting so i said yes. Then at the end of August this box of goodies showed up. It’s such an amazing box full of things that relate to the book and I can’t wait to read it.

I’ve seen a lot of people on Bookstagram have loved this so I think I might pick this up soon-ish.

This isn’t the best photo of everything that came in the box so I might have to take a better one when I start the book because so much went into it.

The last two books I received in August were sent to me from Allen and Unwin New 11Zealand. I can’t remember what drew me to S.T.A.G.S but when I requested it I thought it sounded like something I’d enjoy.

Maybe it was because it sounded kind of similar to The Hunger Games with the “deadly weekend” thing? I really don’t remember. But who doesn’t love reading about death?

Anyway, I have seen a couple of people picking this up on Bookstagram and saying it was better than they expected to I guess I’ll find out what they’re talking about when I get around to picking it up. Whenever that will be.

The last book I received in August was Genuine Fraud. I have only ever read We Were 12Liars by E. Lockhart and I wasn’t really a fan of the main character, she was really annoying, so I couldn’t get into the book. I did see the twist coming though.

But I did like the sound of Genuine Fraud so I thought I’d give this a chance. Although I can’t remember what it’s about now.

So that’s my book haul for August. What books did you get last month?

– Aimee.
