How many new authors (to you) did you read in 2016?

June Wrap Up & July TBR.

I’m a little late sharing my June wrap up but better late than never I guess. I left one book out of my wrap up photo because I forgot it.

I had a pretty good reading month and I only had two three star books which is a first.

My TBR is a little crazy at the moment and I’ve lost track of which books I should read when (release dates) so I’ve made a TBR jar, well it’s my Olaf money tin but whatever. Hopefully it will help me get through the pile of review books I have to read and some of the unread books I have on my shelves.

CmY-OJsVUAAlpPa

So far this month I’ve read two of the books on this pile and I’m 80 pages into the third.

What are you planning on reading in July?

Review: The Book of Pearl by Timothee de Fombelle.

Title – The Book of Pearl
Author – Timothee de Fombelle
How I Got It – From the publisher
Pages – 368 pages
Publication Date – June 2nd 2016 by Walker Books
ISBN – 9781406364620
My Rating – ★★★/5

Joshua Pearl came from a world no one believes in anymore – the world of fairy tale. He’s left the girl he loves back there and is now trapped in our world. As his memories of his home start to fade Joshua come across strange objects, objects not from our world.

Can Joshua remember his past long enough to find his way home?

I received a copy of The Book of Pearl to review from Walker Books Australia.

At the start I was a little confused when chapters went from one perspective to another without any warning. But once I got used to how the stories were being told I was interested to see what would happen. There were three stories being told in this book, one was of Joshua and his life in our world, then there was a man who’d met Joshua as a child and never forgot him (I don’t remember if his name was mentioned) and last there was ClG8BaKUgAAi5nothe story of Illian in the world of fairytale. All were told in a different way, first person/third person, so it was a little confusing to get used to. But I liked how it wasn’t just all told at once and that the connections between Joshua, this man that I can’t remember the name of or if it was even mentioned and the fairytale world, it was there until the end of the book.

I did have a problem with the “love story” in this book. Illian falls for Olia at first sight, typical fairy tale though, and she tells him to go away. When he doesn’t listen and keeps coming back she then apparently falls for him too… There was no communication
between them, they didn’t know a thing about each other apart from prince and fairy. But whatever. I’m not really one for the whole romance thing and I really don’t do the whole love at first sight thing. Maybe it was because of that that I couldn’t really see a connection between Olia and Illian… They went for silent walks together and then are separated. But I’m not going to say anything else because I’ll ruin it.

I did love reading about the marshmallow shop though. Oh my god they sounded so good. I think that was the best magic in this book, the descriptions of the marshmallows. I wanted to just jump into the book and explore the shop for myself.

I love fairytales and even though I haven’t actually read any of the original stories I have read the edited ones for kids. I don’t think this would be classed as a retelling because I couldn’t connect this fairytale with ones I have heard of but it did mention some characters from the ones I grew up in. I think this was just a different take on a fairytale, like the TV show Once Upon a Time where characters from stories are stuck in our world.

I haven’t read a lot of books that have been translated to English, I think this may be the fifth? Anyway I didn’t struggle with anything too much. There were parts where a word or two were wrong but I’m not sure if that was the translation or just a typo. I’d have to read the book again to find them because I didn’t mark the places but I found I could follow the story easily (apart from that chapter/perspective change).

*Thank you Walker Books Australia for sending me a copy*

Leave me a comment if you’ve read this and let me know what you thought.

This meme is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. All you have to do is answer the following three questions in a post and then put a link to that post in the Comments over at Taking on a World of Words.

The questions are:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading – ClbYjmXVEAAQGIf
I started reading The 5th Wave yesterday and I am liking it so far. I’ve had the book over a year and Penguin Random House NZ gave me an excuse to read it when they sent me The Last Star to review. Then I had to go and buy The Infinite Sea because I didn’t have a copy of that.

I’m a little over 100 pages at the moment and I’m hoping to read more of it today. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, I haven’t looked into it at all but I’m glad it’s aliens and not zombies. Although the aliens in this are reminding me of the aliens in The Host with the whole “Awakening” thing.

I’ll be reviewing this once I’ve read it. I have no idea where the story is going but I’m excited to find out. ClG8BaKUgAAi5no

Recently Finished –
This took me longer than I thought to read but not because of the book, which I liked, but because I was busy over the weekend and then I was binge watching Making a Murderer instead of reading.

The Book of Pearl is about a man that was sent to our world from a fairytale land and he’s left the girl he loved behind. Now he’s trying to find a way to keep the memory of his world alive and a way back there before it’s too late.

It was a little confusing at the start. There were three different stories happening in the same book, which all link together, but there was no warning whose story would be in which chapter. If that makes any sense. I got used to it but it kind of put me off at the start and like I said, it was a little confusing. Ck3hiCuVAAAuXjs

I read Fellside last week. I thought it was going to take me longer but once I’d got halfway I flew through it. I think I read half the book in one day, I just couldn’t put it down.

Jess has been sent to Fellside, a prison in Yorkshire, for a crime she can’t remember committing and resulted in a 10-year-old boy dying. Now, she’s being visited by a ghost who she makes a promise to help.

Basically, this is Orange is the New Black with a supernatural twist to it. Corrupt guards, drug smuggling, murder and so much drama. I loved it. I’ll be posting my review of this soon.

Reading Next –
I’ve been using my TBR jar recently and forgot to pick my next book before I posted this. So you’ll find out next week what I picked to read after I finish The 5th Wave next week.

What have you been reading in the last week?

– Aimee.

May 2016 Book Haul.

CjqzhqTUgAAbsPK

I was supposed to be doing a Top Ten Tuesday post today but it’s beach reads and I don’t go to the beach so I decided to post my May book haul instead. Hopefully I can do next weeks Top Ten Tuesday.

I got a total of 24 books this month. I read one of them and have read three of them previously. I have a lot of books on my TBR pile now. I posted that to my Instagram if you want to see, my handle is @aimee_reads23.1

The first book was sent to me from Hachette New Zealand to review. The synopsis of this really drew me in when I read it.

I think there’s some kind of plague where people are burning alive or something and this woman has caught it. She’s desperate to find a cure because she’s pregnant and wants to save her baby. That’s as much as I remember. I was surprised when the book arrived to see it’s about 700 pages or more.

Hopefully I can read this soon, although it may take me awhile to get through.

2I emailed Penguin Random House New Zealand and asked them if there was any chance I could review The Hidden Oracle and they were so kind and sent me a copy.

This is the only book I’ve read from this haul. As soon as I’d finished reading Flawed by Cecelia Ahern I picked this up. I love Rick’s twist on Greek mythology and was so happy to get back to this world.

I have reviewed this and you can read that here. I don’t post reviews with spoilers, or I try not to. But I do recommend that you read the Heroes of Olympus series before you pick this up if you haven’t already. It gives some updates on the characters from that series.

3The third book was a surprise from Simon and Schuster Australia. I didn’t remember requesting this and when it showed up I was a little bit confused. I don’t know if it’s my kind of book, which is why I didn’t request a copy but I might give it a chance. It does sound interesting.

I think it’s something about a lost pearl and follows two people over different continents as someone tries to find it. That could be completely wrong but I guess I’ll find out when ever I get around to it.

Allen and Unwin New Zealand sent me a copy of Ruined to review. I first heard of this last 4year so when I had the opportunity to review it I was really excited.

I saw Amie Kaufman had read this and I have loved her books so I am even more excited to get to this soon.

I have completely forgotten what this is about. I think it’s a fantasy though and I love fantasy books. I wish they hadn’t changed the cover though. The ARC cover was so pretty and I think the US edition still has that cover. I don’t really like this one but hopefully the story will make up for it. I don’t want to judge the book on it’s cover before I’ve even read it. I think if I do like it I’ll buy another edition. Mine is a little damaged. 5

The next four books I received from Walker Books Australia to review.

This one, Burn Baby Burn, is set in the seventies while the Son of Sam, a serial killer is on the streets.  This girl meets a guy at a restaurant she works at and I think she starts falling for him. But in a time where anyone can be this killer, cans he trust this new guy? That’s pretty much all I remember.

The disco ball looks better in person, especially in the sun. But it’s going into winter here and so I have really crap lighting. Be prepared for really crap photos over the next couple of months. 6

I think Tripping Back Blue is about a boy who is selling drugs or doing drugs in a way to save someone he cares about but finds out that that isn’t the best way to go about it. Obviously. I mean, drugs are never the answer.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this because I hate drugs but I also wanted to give it a chance and not judge it just because of that.

I’m hoping I like it. I love this cover thought. I’m not really sure what’s going on with it but I love the colours.

The publicist at Walker Books Australia that I talk to said this was one of her favourite 7books of this year so I definitely wanted to find out why. She’s recommended me a few books that I’ve loved so I’m sure I’ll love this too.

This books about first love that defines a lifetime (I know, a bit cheesy but I’m hoping there’s more to it than that). Apparently fans of David Levithan will like this. I haven’t read many of his books and the ones I have read I thought were okay, not worth all the hype. But I have only read two or three, not really enough to judge.

I’m hoping to get to this in June. I think that’s when it’s released but I could be wrong. 8

The last book I received from Walker Books Australia was Maladapted. It says on the cover that it’s a must read for fans of The Maze Runner. I did like that when I read it a few years ago. Hopefully I’ll like this too.

This follows the aftermath of a terrorist attack where Cillian was the only survivor. Now he and Tess are trying to figure out what happened and they find a link to his father. That’s pretty much all I remember. I don’t know how that sounds like fans of The Maze Runner would like it but I guess I’ll find out when I read it. It was one of the reasons that I requested a copy to review.

The next four books were surprise book mail from HarperCollins New Zealand. I’d been 9looking at two of them online but didn’t know they’d been sent to me.

The first one I pulled out of the parcel was Unrivaled by Alyson Noel. I’ve never read a book by her before but I’d read that fans of Pretty Little Liars will like this and I love that show so I was interested to see what this is about.

I think this is the first book in a series but I’m not really sure. I’m sure if it’s anything like Pretty Little Liars that I’ll love it. I’m not going to go into it with expectations though because that will end badly.

I love this cover, it’s so simple but so pretty. 11

The second book I received was Queen of Hearts. I’d been looking at this, not only because of the beautiful cover, but because it’s about the Queen of Hearts in Wonderland and how she came to be the way she is. At least, that’s what I think it’s about. There’s also something about her father, the King of Hearts but I can’t remember what.

It’s been a long time since I last read Alice in Wonderland but I loved it  when I did. I’m not sure if it matters though. I’m sure it takes place years before Alice’s adventures. But isn’t the cover of this amazing? I feel like I keep saying that.

The other book that HarperCollins New Zealand sent me I’d never heard of. When I read 10the synopsis of Disruption (I think that’s the first one) it reminded me of Slated by Teri Terry and I loved that trilogy so I’m sure I’ll like this too.

It’s a little different but there is some kind of microchip involved, like Slated, but I think it does something different in these books.

I think these have been re-released with new covers. Someone on Twitter said that she loved these covers better than the ones she has but as I’ve never heard of them before so I have no idea. But I do like these covers, especially Disruption. 12

Raymie Nightingale was sent to me last month from Walker Books Australia but only turned up recently because someone forgot to put New Zealand on my address so it has been on an adventure.

This book takes place over a summer and is about friendship. I think Raymie enters a competition but can’t remember why. I’ve never read one of Kate DiCamillo’s books before but I am looking forward to this one. I don’t know when I’ll get to it but it’s not very long so I think I’ll be able to squeeze it in too.

The next two books I received from Hachette New Zealand to review. The Crystal Run is 13Sheila O’Flanagan’s first YA book. I’ve never read any of her other books but this seemed interesting. And my photos does not do the cover justice.

Smoke sounds really good too. I think it said on the press release that it’s the missing link between J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman. I’ve only read one book by Philip Pullman but have two more on my shelves to read. And if you didn’t already know I love J.K. Rowling. So I couldn’t resist this. I think it’s about sin, the more you’ve sinned the more you’re coverd in ash or something and the higher up are, apparently, sin free. I doubt that’s possible but I’ll find out when I read the book. I know there’s something about a school and a trip to London where some pupils discover something to so with the ash. I think. 14

The last books I received from publishers this month were from Scholastic New Zealand. These are both the third books in a series I read and reviewed last year.

Thatchthorpe is the third book in the Bloodtree Chronicles. I reviewed the first two books Sanspell and Bragonsthyme on here last year. You can click the links to read them. I’m not sure if this will be the last book in the series or not.

The Towers of Illica is the third book in the Star of Deltora series. I’ve also read and reviewed the first two books, Shadows of the Master and Two Moons. You can click the links to read my reviews.

I’m hoping to read both of these soon. They aren’t very long so I’m sure I’ll fly through them.

The last books I got at a Red Cross book sale. I have lasted over a month on my book buying 15ban and broke it for these. But, they only cost $24 for all seven. Not bad when one book in New Zealand can cost that much.

I was so surprised to see the collector’s edition of Insurgent there but I didn’t hesitate to pick it up. It’s so pretty and has deckled pages!

I’ve slowly been collecting the Bloodlines series and now all I need are Bloodlines and Silver Shadows.

I’ve never heard of Dark Alchemy, which is full of short stories, and The Replacement, which is a different take on changelings I think, but they both sounded really good and for that price I couldn’t say no.

Then there’s One Day. I’m sure I’ve seen the movie but I can’t remember much about it. I’ll get to it one day.

So, that’s my May book haul. How many books did you get this month?

– Aimee.
