Review: Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton.

Title – Traitor to the Throne
Series – Rebel of the Sands #2
Author – Alwyn Hamilton
How I got it – From the publisher
Publication Date – February 2nd 2017 by Faber & Faber
ISBN – 9780571325412
RRP – $18.99
My rating – ★★★★/5

“This is not about blood or love. This is about treason.”

Amani has always been more gunpowder than girly and as the Blue-Eyed Bandit her power just keeps getting stronger. And so has the rebellion Amani continues to risk her life for.

After a horrible kidnapping leads Amani to be held captive inside the Sultan’s palace she finds herself using her desert instincts to survive. Betrayal, cunning and espionage are a way of life in the harem – and Amani finds herself fitting right in.

But as ghosts of the past continue to haunt her, Amani’s greatest fight will be to keep her heart and desires under control.

I received a copy of Traitor to the Throne from Allen and Unwin New Zealand to review. C8rurrsVoAAkpehThis is the second book in the Rebel of the Sands trilogy. You can read my review of the first book here.

I loved Rebel of the Sands when I read it last year so I was really looking forward to reading Traitor to the Throne and it did not disappoint. I thought I might have to re-read the first book before I started this but there’s a short recap at the start that bought back most of what happened in Rebel of the Sands. Which I was happy about.

The world in these book, all the magic and the rebellion, is so well written and addictive that I cannot put these books down when I’m reading them. I also love all the twists. I’ve stopped trying to figure out what’s going to happen next and just let the story play out now.

Speaking of twists.. That ending! I did figure out something was going on but still.. Wow. I want the next book right now!! Especially because this is all leading up to something big. I can wait to see what’s next for all of these characters.

I love Amani and Jin. I did want them together more in Traitor to the Throne but I have my fingers crossed they will be in the next book. Amani was kidnapped and because we’re in her perspective I missed Jin. But the story was still really good. I’m not in this for the romance.

If you haven’t already picked up a copy of Rebel of the Sands and Traitor to the Throne then I highly recommend finding copies of them. They’re just so magical and addictive. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

*Thank you Allen and Unwin New Zealand for sending me a copy to review*

April Wrap Up & May TBR.

monthlywrapup

I’ve finally got my May TBR together so I decided to share it and my April wrap up today. I did forget one book in my wrap up photo but it’s so hard to get back into the box set that I couldn’t be bothered getting it and taking a new one. So I’m just going to jump right in.

C-tR8QwVwAERbpt
The Roanoke Girls by Amy Ewing – 4/5 stars
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling – 5/5 stars
Black by Fleur Ferris – 4/5 stars
What Girls are Made Of by Elana K. Arnold – 3/5 stars
Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton – 4/5 stars
The Silent Invasion by James Bradley – 3/5 stars
Front Lines by Michael Grant – 3/5 stars
Into the Water by Paula Hawkins – 4/5 stars
But then I Came Back by Estelle Lure – 3/5 stars
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling – 5/5 stars

For some reason I’m having trouble with WordPress on both Google Chrome (it won’t load at all) and Internet Explorer. For some reason it won’t let me post the stars that I usually use as my ratings in my wrap ups. I tried Firefox or whatever it’s called but that was slower to load than the computer and I just could not be fucked with that. So if anyone can tell me why it won’t load on Chrome it would be great! I’ve uninstalled it and re-installed it and still have the same problem.

Anyway, onto my May TBR.

C-xuYfcXkAAoUSp
I started reading The End of Oz yesterday. I didn’t get a lot read because I kept getting distracted but I’m hoping to read more today. I’ve already picked what I’ll be reading next, Finding Nevo. This sounds so good and I can’t wait to pick it up.

What’s on your May TBR?

WWW Wednesday [April 12th 2017] –

This meme is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. All you have to do is answer the following three questions in a post and then put a link to that post in the Comments over at Taking on a World of Words.

The questions are:
1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading – 2
I started reading The Silent Invasion yesterday. I recently received a copy of this from Pan Macmillan New Zealand.

I’m pretty sure I’ll finish this today. Fingers crossed. I have really liked the story so far and I’m interested in this alien disease that’s infecting the people, animals and plants. It sounds crazy but I don’t think I’ll get any answers with how much I have left to read.

There is this insta-love going on which I’m just choosing to ignore because I’m not into that kind of thing at all. I don’t think the book needs it to be honest. But that’s just my opinion. Aside from that it’s been a good read and I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends. This is the first book in the Change trilogy.

Recently Finished – c5jr9o-vmaajubd
I finished Traitor to the Throne on the weekend and I loved it! I thought I’d have to re-read Rebel of the Sands before I picked this up but there’s a little re-cap at the start of Traitor to the Throne, which I found very helpful.

This is the second book in the trilogy and I cannot wait for the next and last book to come out. Even though I’m not ready for this to end. I love Amari and all the rebels.

Anyway, I’ll talk more about this in my review, which I hope to post soon. But if you haven’t read Rebel of the Sands then I recommend finding a copy. I loved both of these books. 5

Okay, I’m not really sure what to say about this book… It didn’t have the best message at the start, that there are conditions to love and the main character (I’ve forgotten her name) is willing to do almost anything to prove to her boyfriend that she’s worthy of his love and his time. Which is completely ridiculous!

I don’t know how to review this book yet. I can’t understand the mother at all. But she definitely played a part in the way her daughter thinks. What Girls are Made Of really frustrated me at times. Hopefully I can get my thoughts in order soon so that I can review it. 9

Reading Next –
I read Eric’s debut novel, Not If I See You First, last year and I loved it. I’d never read a book from the perspective of someone who’s blind before but I am so glad that I did. It was such a good book.

Which is why I’m looking forward to reading A Tragic Kind of Wonderful. I think this book deals with mental health issues. But don’t hold me to that. I could be wrong. I’m hoping to start this tomorrow.

What have you read recently??

– Aimee.

March Wrap Up & April TBR.

monthlywrapup

I read a lot more in March than I did in February. I was actually falling behind on my reading challenge in February but I’ve managed to be ahead of schedule now. So yay. Anyway, onto my wrap up…

C8Mm9c8VoAEmEXe

Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken – ★★★/5
The Song from Somewhere Else by A.F. Harrold – ★★★/5
King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard – ★★★★/5
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas – ★★★★★/5
See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng – ★★★★/5
Aerie by Maria Dahvana Headley – ★★★/5
The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles – ★★★/5
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – ★★★★/5
The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil – ★★★/5
Shadows on the Moon by Zoe Marriott – ★★★★/5
Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson – ★★★★★/5

My favourites were definitely The Hate U Give and Allegedly. Which I didn’t think I’d finish in March so I put it on my April TBR. I couldn’t be bothered taking another photo though.

C8SfLoEV0AAepe9

So Allegedly doesn’t count and I’ve already read The Roanoke Girls. That was disturbing but really good. I couldn’t put it down.

I’m actually reading a book that’s not in this photo because I didn’t have it at the time I took it. I started the new edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by J.K. Rowling this morning. It’s got a forward by the author, Newt Scamander, which was the best! I can’t wait to find the six new beasts in the book.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will be a re-read. I wanted to re-read the series after seeing the Fantastic Beasts movie last year.

What’s on your April TBR?

– Aimee.

February Book Haul.

c5tx2nwu0aahnzv

I didn’t get photos of every book I got in February. I received 16 books from publishers and I bought two for myself. So, I’ll just jump right in.

The first five books I got while I was staying at a friend of the family while we were waiting to move into our new place. The first book I got was Cruelty by Scott Bergstrom. I don’t have a photo of this yet. With all the moving and unpacking I fell behind with my book haul last month on my bookstagram. I haven’t read Cruelty yet but I hope to get to it soon.c4k-6xrucaav53l

The next two books I received from HarperCollins New Zealand to review. Wayfarer is the sequel and conclusion to Passenger. I read Passenger last year and I thought it was okay, not the best. But the cliffhanger at the end of the book made me want to read the sequel.

I’ve actually read this. I still had the same problems with Wayfarer that I had with Passenger but I think because I was expecting them that I was able to ignore and skip over the parts that had too much detail. Like the friggen ending. I’ll talk about all that in my review though. Which I hope to have up soon. I’ve fallen behind on a lot of this with the move but I’m hoping to catch up soon. c40ckgevcaajvd

The other book I received from HarperCollins New Zealand was Aerie. This is the sequel to Magonia. This is another one where I wasn’t really sure about the first book but I still wanted to see what the sequel was like. It’s not that I didn’t like Magonia, it was just different. But not in a bad way.

Amway, Aerie is on my March TBR so hopefully I’ll get to read it soon. I don’t know what to expect with Aerie but I’m looking forward to reading it. I don’t know if this is going to be a duology or a trilogy/series.. c5js__vumaadwcx

I received Defender from Hachette New Zealand to review.

When this arrived I didn’t remember what it was about but I must have requested it for a reason. I think it’s about voices… I’m not really sure.

I don’t know when I’ll get to read this. My reading has slowed down so much in the last couple of months. I hope now that we’re settled into the new house that things will get back to normal but who knows..

I received a copy of The Edge of Everything from Allen and Unwin New Zealand to review. c5edcoyukae99bbThis is actually the first book mail I received in my now house.

I haven’t read this yet but it is on my March TBR so I’m hoping to get to it soon.

If you’ve read my book hauls before then you know I suck at remembering what books are about and I’m just too lazy to look them all up. It takes long enough to do a book haul post. I cannot be bothered looking up every book too. I don’t have time for that.

Anyway, I love the orange pages. The photo doesn’t do them justice because they’re so bright. c45b1mrvmaak19c

Hachette New Zealand sent me a copy of King’s Cage. Yes, I know it wasn’t in my book haul photo. That’s because I forgot where I put it and by the time I found it I couldn’t be bothered taking a new photo. Lazy, right?

Anyway, this is the third book in the Red Queen series and I’m actually reading this at the moment. I’ll be finished today because I need to know how this ends but at the same time I really don’t. Victoria’s cliffhangers are normally kind of shocking and painful. And then there’s a really long wait until the next book is released.

I love this series. King’s Cage was one of my most anticipated releases of 2017.

c5oqrmnvaaangvi

Walker Books Australia surprised me with a copy of The Light Fantastic. I’d never heard of this until I opened the box it came in.

Again, I’m not sure what it’s about but I hope to read it soon. I made quite a big March TBR considering I didn’t read much in January and February. If I get through the books that I plan to read in March early then hopefully I can squeeze this on. Maybe. I don’t know. I don’t even know what this is about…

Also, you’ll have to excuse the really crappy photos in this post. I don’t have a lot to work with here, flowers and tree wise. There’s two tiny trees in the backyard. c5ydlcfvmaakpks

Penguin Random House New Zealand sent me a copy of See You in the Cosmos to review. I thought this sounded really interesting when I read the synopsis.

It’s about Alex, who’s made recordings on his iPod to send into space for other forms of life to see what it’s like on Earth. Then he goes on a road trip with his dog, Carl Sagan, to launch it into space but gets a lot more than he expected.

See You in the Cosmos is on my March TBR. I actually held a poll on my twitter to see what my next read should be. I can’t wait to read the book that won but I also wanted to read this too. I’ll read it after the book that won so it’s okay. c5tbbnyucaaxaab

Another surprise from Walker Books Australia. I’d seen this on bookstagram but didn’t really know what it was about. Then it appeared one day and I was really excited to read it.

I don’t know when I’ll get to it though. And, yes, since receiving a copy I have forgotten what it’s about. I’m sure it has somethings to do with running though.

I love getting surprise book mail. Who am I kidding.. I love getting book mail. It’s the best part of my day sometimes. Does that make me a really boring/sad person?c5oj3gxukaepmvq

Hachette New Zealand sent me both He Said/She Said and The Girl Before to review. These both sound really good. I think they’re both psychological thrillers but I’m not 100% sure.

My mother took The Girl Before the day I got it and has already read it. She said she really liked it. I think it’s been picked up for a movie but I could be wrong.

He Said/She Said is about a couple witnessing a crime, I think, and then not reporting it? And then whatever happens in the book picks up a year last? I don’t know. It sounds familiar but I could be completely wrong. c5jr9o-vmaajubd

Allen and Unwin New Zealand sent me a copy of Traitor to the Throne to review. This is the sequel to Rebel of the Sands. I read Rebel of the Sands last year and I loved it. I can’t remember what happened in it and I don’t want to re-read it so I might have to look up a recap somewhere. If anyone knows a good site please let me know!

I have Traitor to the Throne on my March TBR and I cannot wait to read it. But it’ll have to wait until I find a good recap site. I did have one last year but it sucked. I needed a recap of An Ember in the Ashes and it said something like “blah blah person reveals secret to another person” but not what the freaking secret was. What kind of half assed and completely unhelpful recap is that? Anyway, if you know a good site what actually recaps books properly please let me know!c5o3sy3uoaavvim

Penguin Random House sent me a copy of Into the Water to review. I loved Paula Hawkins’ first book, The Girl on the Train so when I saw she’d written another psychological thriller I had to read it.

I’m assuming this has something to do with water because again, I can’t remember what it’s about. I mean, it doesn’t actually matter. I loved The Girl on the Train so I don’t need to know what this is about to know I want to read it.

This doesn’t come out here till May so I will be reading it closer to the release date. c5ixfvbu0aaivm3

Walker Books Australia sent me a copy of The Hate U Give. This has been one of the books I’ve wanted to read for so long and it’ll be my next read after I finish King’s Cage.

I think this was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the song Thug Life by Tupac. But don’t hold me to that.

The Hate U Give follows Starr as she witnesses a policeman shoot and kill her unarmed best friend, Khalil. As the only witness to the crime what Starr does next could tear her community apart. It could also get her killed. I think this sounds like a book everyone needs to read and I can’t wait to pick it up. c5tvjy-uyaqkcfe

The last book I have a photo of was sent to me from Hachette New Zealand to review.

I have read Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and wasn’t a fan. But Strange the Dreamer sounds interesting so I can’t wait to read it.

This is on my March TBR so I’m hoping to read it before the release date so I can have my review done in time. That hasn’t happened for a looong time now.

Like I said at the start of my post there are a few books I didn’t manage to take photos of. I’m just going to list them here.

Cruelty by Scott Bergstrom,
Caraval by Stephanie Garber,
Heartless by Marissa Meyer,
The Great Shelby Holmes: Girl Detective by Elizabeth Eulberg,
This Beats Perfect by Rebecca Denton.

Cruelty was sent to me from Walker Books Australia to review. I bought Caraval and Heartless for myself. The Great Shelby Holmes: Girl Detective was surprise book mail from Allen and Unwin New Zealand and is a middle grade retelling of Sherlock Holmes. And I won a copy of This Beats Perfect from Hachette New Zealand.

So that’s my book haul for another month. How many books did you get in February?

– Aimee.

February Wrap Up and March TBR.

monthlywrapup

I didn’t read a lot in February. With all the stuff going on I didn’t have a lot of spare time to read. So this will be a very short wrap up.

c5ydphavuaahf6k

So I managed to read six books in February. Two of them were re-reads.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth – ★★★★/5
The Severed Land by Maurice Gee – ★★★/5
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – ★★★★/5
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman – ★★★/5
The Black Key by Amy Ewing – ★★★★/5
Glass Sword by Veronica Roth – ★★★★★/5

My favourite books this month were Red Queen and Glass Sword but they’re re-reads. I also loved The Black Key and Carve the Mark. I’ll be reviewing these (not the re-reads) soon.

c54nnpguoaa6pje

I have so many books I need to read that’s it’s getting harder to make my TBRs now. I’m currently reading and loving King’s Cage. I haven’t picked what I’m reading next but I’m thinking See You in the Cosmos or The Hate U Give.. Ugh, decisions..

What’s on your TBR for March?

– Aimee.

Top Ten Tuesday (December 13th): Top Ten Books I’m Looking Forward To For The First Half Of 2017.

ttt-2

It’s been a while since I last did a Top Ten Tuesday so I thought it was about time I got back into the habit. I’m not going to put these in any kind of order because I don’t have time for that. They’ll be in the order I find them on Goodreads.

1. King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard.

2. Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth.

Okay, so I didn’t check to see if these are all released in the first half of 2017 but I really don’t care. There are a few more from the Goodreads list that didn’t make it here because it’s a top ten and my list would be a lot longer.

What are some books you’re looking forward to in 2017?

Aimee.

So out of the 134 books I’ve read so far this year 75 were by authors I’d never read before. Which is pretty good I think.

How many new authors (to you) did you read in 2016?

– Aimee.

Best Books of 2016 So Far.

I’ve been meaning to do this post for so long now and I finally decided to just do it. I have been boring myself with the same kind of posts recently so I wanted to do something different today.

I’ll probably just share the books I gave five stars to on Goodreads to make this a little easier.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Illustrated Edition) by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay.
Cgd65wkXEAA1RJpThis book is so beautiful and I loved that reading it was a different experience with illustrations. I am really looking forward to seeing what the other books are like. Especially Prisoner of Azkaban which is my favourite book in the series.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Cn7-VfIVYAA5tzmI’ve only read one book by Jay Kristoff (Illuminae) and I loved it but after reading Nevernight I think I may have to read his other books. I loved this book and I love Mia. I can’t wait for the next book in the trilogy. If you haven’t read Nevernight I highly recommend it.

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard
CZrTOVDUkAEFp0gI loved Red Queen when I read it last year and I was really excited for Glass Sword. I really should have re-read Red Queen before I read this but I still really enjoyed it. I cannot wait for King’s Crown next year. The ending in Glass Sword was crazy!

The Art of Being Normal by Lisa WilliamsonCiDIL5vUgAA0MvHI think everyone should read this book. I have always been accepting of others no matter their race, gender or sexuality but this book taught me something I never even thought about. I had to explain it to my mother the other day. I ended up just handing her this book because I think it explains it better than I can.

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey
CoasH5RVYAAO7a8I honestly can’t remember why I gave this five stars. I mean, I liked it and I couldn’t put it down but I really don’t know why I gave it five stars… I’ve read The Last Star now and really liked the trilogy but I had a feeling I knew how it was going to end for a certain character.. The only one I really liked.

Storm Siren by Mary WeberCfJxPjRUAAEDGpHThis is another book I couldn’t put down when I was reading it. I haven’t got the other two books in the trilogy yet but I plan on getting them one day so I can finish it and see how it ends. And the cover is gorgeous!

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
rebel-of-the-sands-2
This was one of my anticipated reads for 2016 and I loved it. This is another book where I can’t wait to read the sequel. I also love this cover and it’s so much better in person.

The Reaction by Helena Coggan
IMG_20160305_112032The Reaction is the sequel to The Catalyst and I didn’t give that five stars because it took me awhile to get used to Helena’s writing style but by the time I read The Reaction I was used to it and it didn’t annoy me as much because I knew everything would be revealed in the end. I couldn’t put this down when I was reading it. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier
CaAA696UUAAGHLEMy Sister Rosa was so disturbing and creepy and I loved it. I’ve never read a book with a child psychopath that isn’t set in a fantasy book (Joffery) which is why it was so disturbing because obviously there are people out there like Rosa.

What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler
CY4MOaVUAAItzoqThis is also another book that needs to be read because this happens to too many women and small town judgement is ridiculous. I live in a small town and I’m not saying all of them are the same but I’ve seen the judgement of my small town. This book made me so angry while I was reading it because this actually happens and it needs to stop. It doesn’t matter how a woman dresses or how much alcohol she’s drunk, no still means no and they shouldn’t be judged for any of it.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany
co5gjzkukae-dtvI know some people didn’t like this but I loved it. I’ve never read a play before so that was a new experience for me and yes, I did think Albus trying to bring someone he had no real connection to back from the dead was a little crazy but I loved the journey it took him and Scorpius on. Especially the alternate world where Voldemort had won. That was really interesting to read.

So, those are my favourite books of 2016 so far. What are yours?
